4 Mar 2008 - World Book Day events

March 4th 2008

Dear all

As promised, here are the details for this week’s World Book Day celebrations!

World Book Day

This year we are asking each child to bring in their favourite fiction book of the moment (or one from when they were younger) and the children and teachers will then use those books for the day’s activities, including a whole school display.  Children may also come in dressed as a book character (not necessarily from their favourite book but that would be brilliant!) – but if they choose not to dress up will need to be in full school uniform as last year – this is not a non-uniform day.  Please stress to the children how important it is to choose a real book (not the book of a film) as prizes will only be given for children who are dressed as real book characters, and who bring in real books!  We have explained to the children that High School Musical was not originally a book, so therefore is not what we are looking for (the book came afterwards, as did Power Rangers, Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles etc.).  However, some of the Disney films with which the children are familiar were originally fairy tales, so would be fine.  Harry Potter was a book before it was a film so is also fine, and Spiderman is an honourable exception to cartoon characters as it was originally a comic book, before the film was made.  If you are not sure, just ask!  As I mentioned, there will be prizes on the day!

Bradley Class Family Assembly

This will be taking place tomorrow at in the hall (Wednesday March 5th) and all parents of Bradley class are invited.

Mothering Sunday stall

Well done everyone – we raised £112.53 at the stall – a brilliant effort by the whole school community.

Stamps in reading diaries!

Some of you will have noticed that teachers are now stamping ‘I read in a group today’ in your child’s reading diary, usually with the date and the name of the book, and sometimes a comment if appropriate.  This is to let you know that your child has been in a guided reading group that day with the teacher, working towards specific reading goals for their age group and reading ability. Guided reading has been shown to be a very effective way of developing children into independent readers, and has been working successfully in the majority of schools for a number of years.  We have just invested a considerable amount of money in new guided reading books which I’m sure the children will enjoy reading with us in the coming months.  We would just like to remind you that reading with and to your child is the single most important piece of homework that a primary school child needs, and ask that you continue to hear them read regularly, and to write in the diary when you have done so.

With best wishes
