16 May 2008 - End of SATS newsletter!

May 16th 2008

Dear all

SATS Week

Hooray!  SATS week is now over for all of us and I’m proud to say that everyone has worked very hard, and I’m sure they’ve all done their best – well done to you all!  Any children who were absent over the SATS period will still however still need to catch up on any papers they have missed over the next week.  For your future information, SATS week for the Year 6 children is always around the second full week of May, and we will always do our optional SATS around the same time .

Wear your Wellies Day!

Thank you to everyone who joined in with this – we raised over £58 for the Children’s Hospice South West and a number of children decorated some fabulous wellies – see the website for photographs of them!

Good Weather

With the hope that the sunshine will return to us, please can you make sure that the children come to school with sunscreen on (or with them, but please bear in mind we are not allowed to apply it) and with sunhats.  These are available from the office at the bargain price of £2.00.  Children should also have water bottles in school (especially useful when they are down at the MUGA and away from the drinking fountain) and these again can be purchased from the office for £1.00.  Please note that the children are only allowed WATER and no other drinks during school time.

Headlice

There have been a number of cases of headlice across the school – please check your child’s hair very thoroughly over the weekend – we all have to work together on this if we are to keep the little blighters away!  If you are having repeated problems with this please telephone the school nursing service or the health visiting service who are able to give you some good advice.

Christian Aid Walk

Congratulations to our children and parents (especially Miss Alcock) who recently walked in very hot sunshine in aid of Christian Aid Week.  I don’t know as yet how much was raised by our school, but will let you know.  Please note that a special watch and hat were found at the Racecourse – please phone 01626 353344 to identify if you think they are yours.

Devon Youth Games

I have been asked by Nikki Toms, Teignbridge District Council’s Sports Development Officer to pass the following information on to you.

Young sports stars of tomorrow are being encouraged to take part in trials for the 2008 Devon Youth Games, Devon’s very own Olympics!  Trials are being held in May in various locations around the district and are free to enter.  Those taking part must either live or go to school in the Teignbridge area and boys and girls can take part in each sport providing they meet the age criteria.  The best and brightest young sportspeople attending the trials will then go on to compete against districts from around Devon at the Devon Youth Games on Saturday June 28th – they’ll also receive free t-shirts and free transport to and from the games in Plymouth .

School Council

I’m pleased to say that we now have our school council up and running with an elected Executive Committee.  Our chairperson is Luke Rapley, Vice Chair is Harriet Hebbes, Secretary is Megan Scott and Treasurer is Charlotte Walter.  The first proper School Council Meeting is on June 19th, and the Executive Committee meets to set the agenda on June 12th.  Children will be having class council meetings the week we come back after half term in preparation for this.  Well done and thank you to our new school councillors!  Wilf’s mum, Elinor Brooker has agreed to be the Link Governor, and I’m the Link Teacher!  We are hoping to set up a bank account for the school council, and I’d like a bank/building society to come in and have a chat with all of our children in preparation for this – so if you have any connections with either please let me know – otherwise I’ll just pick the nearest one!

Church Schools Week

As explained before, Templar class will be taking part in this and will be visiting the churches on Monday 19th May from 9.30 – 11.00 am.  You do not need to sign a permission slip as it’s a local visit.

Half term dates

Please remember that half term is from Monday May 26th to Friday May 29th inclusive, and that school is closed on Monday June 2nd for a teacher training day.

Newton Abbot Schools’ Green Conference

A conference is being organised for all schools in the Newton Abbot Local Learning Community on Thursday October 23rd at Coombeshead Community College .  Representatives of all schools will attend, and there will be guest speakers, filming of our schools and their ‘green’ activities and workshops for the children to participate in from local businesses etc.  We are hoping to send next year’s school council to this event, and in order to prepare, two current councillors, Harriet and Luke, are going to a planning afternoon on June 6th (letters to those parents to follow).  Over this next half term we will be thinking about our existing ‘green’ habits and trying out some new ones, so if you have any ideas that could help us – please let us know!  Mrs Kathy Biggins, one of our parents and MTA has agreed to ‘lead’ this initiative for us – thank you Kathy!

Have a lovely weekend everyone – especially all those who have been involved with SATS this week!

With best wishes
