27 Sep 2007 - Newsletter 2

Dear all

Now that we have all settled into our new classes and the new school year, just some reminders of events and news.

New interactive whiteboards
I'm really pleased to let you know that all our classrooms now have interactive whiteboards, and the teachers and children are getting to know them very quickly! We also should have new PCs in the suite and clusters of PCs in Forde class by Christmas, along with a new projector and screen in the hall.

Operation Christmas Child
Attached to this letter is an information leaflet about Operation Christmas Child. At All Saints we want to collect a record breaking amount of boxes this year (my current record is 143!) and I will be talking to the children about how they can help before half term. The half term holiday is an ideal time to collect items for the boxes -details of what can be sent are in the leaflet. It is very important that the boxes can still be opened - so please wrap the lid separately. Please pop a cheque for £2 in the box, or pay online. If you decide to pay online please could you let us know, otherwise we can become liable for including the £2 from school funds. See http://www.samaritanspurse.uk.com/

Letters home
Over the last few months we have noticed that school letters are not always finding their way to you - the people who need them most! As I mentioned in my last newsletter, all letters from me will now also appear on the website, but we would still like to remind you to look in your child's bag or bookbag for letters, just in case they forget to give them to you!

CAP meeting for parents
This was held this week at school - thank you to the parent who attended this very informative meeting.

Health Week
All next week we will be thinking about health issues in a special week, including the visits from the CAP team and the dentist (to do a presentation). We are also going to be launching 'Walk to School' month, and will be encouraging (and rewarding) those children who come to school in an environmentally friendly way! Leigh (who runs our after school club on Mondays) will be coming in to work with the whole school on being fit and healthy on Monday afternoon!
Finally, we will be holding a 'Wear it pink' day on Thursday October 4th. This is to raise money for research into breast cancer. We are asking each child to wear something (or everything!) pink and bring in about £2 as a donation to this worthwhile work, which last year raised over £3 million.

School Improvement Plan
Please find attached the outline plan for this year and the next two years. There is a copy available outside my office if anyone would like to see the plan in more detail.

Message from the Governors
The Governing Body met at the beginning of term, the day before the children arrived back from their summer holidays. Mrs Rowe-Jones explained the points of the School Improvement Plan to us; she also gave us a short talk on SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning), one of the new government initiatives which deals with the social and emotional well-being of children, and how it was going to be incorporated into the curriculum. We then met with the staff who are the subject leaders for the subjects we as governors are particularly interested in. All governors follow the progress of at least two subjects on the curriculum.

It was good so see the staff so rested after their holiday; we are so fortunate to have such a hardworking and enthusiastic staff at All Saints. We look forward to a successful new academic year and to seeing the children when we visit the school. I really enjoy helping in Courtenay class on a Friday morning and getting to know the children there.

Sandy French (Governor)

Harvest Service
Thank you again to all parents and friends who attended this morning's Harvest Service, which was really brilliant! Thank you also for all of the generous contributions that will be shared with those in most need.

New dates
On Monday October 15th, which is the beginning of National Film Week, our year 3 and 4 children have been invited to a free screening of a very good film (it's a secret at the moment - but it's a U) at the Newton Abbot Cinema. Details to follow.

The local charity Shelterbox are visiting our school on 17th October to lead an assembly on their excellent work.

With best wishes
